AIDS Awareness Rally

2nd December, 2011

People, who have AIDS, not only have to suffer the disease but also have to bear the stereotype that comes along it. Mostly people have misconceptions about the various aspects of the disease, and have stereotypes about people with AIDS. To clear the air about AIDS and its aspects, UPG NSS took out an AIDS awareness rally on the 2nd December, 2011. A variety of posters were made to tackle the misconceptions. Most of the focus was maintained on using condoms to prevent AIDS from spreading.

The NSS volunteers gathered at 2:00 pm wearing the NSS t-shirts. We reached the Nehru Nagar slum by 2:30 pm. We formed groups of two and walked in a line. As soon as we entered the slum, we started yelling out slogans such as “ ek do, ek do, AIDS ko phek do; teen char, teen char, condom pehno mere yaar”. Initially people felt awkward and giggled at the use of the word “condom”, but it did not make the NSS volunteers uncomfortable. We purposely included words such as “condom” and “sex” because people usually feel very uncomfortable, talking about it. One of the purposes of the rally was to make people realize that it is okay to talk about sex. We had to eliminate the stigma.

The rally went on for around 45 minutes. After the rally, it was time for the street play. The NSS volunteers gathered at the entrance of Nehru Nagar slums, where we formed a circle. Everyone, who was a part of the circle, sat down when the play started. The play tackled AIDS and AIDS related misconceptions and stereotypes. After the play was over, a lot of people had surrounded, and were clapping. It was all in all a very unique experience.

Debate

5th December, 2011

A debate competition was devised by NSS members of Usha Pravin Gandhi College of Management. The topic for the debate competition was “should sex education be mandatory in schools in India?” volunteers were divided in two groups FOR and AGAINST. The debate commenced at 2.30. The spokesperson of both the groups justified their views by raising strong points on sex education. Each volunteer from both the groups proposed their views. Many points were highlighted which are of grave concern when it comes to educating children and teenagers about sex. FOR team was strong enough to influence the opposing team. From this debate, it was concluded that sex education should be made mandatory in schools in India.

Movie Screening

7th December, 2011

Usha Pravin Gandhi College had organized a Movie screening for all the NSS volunteers to create awareness about HIV AIDS. The Screening was held on 7th of December 2011 on 4th floor at 2.30 pm, wherein all the NSS Volunteers were actively present. The name of the movie screened was “Phir Milenge”. The Movie was about a working woman who was surfing from HIV and the problems that she faced because of it. The movie was successful in spreading awareness about AIDS in its own way; it showed in general the problems faced by any AIDS patients and also how to face the problems. The volunteers learnt from the movie about AIDS Awareness and also how to treat patients suffering with it. The activity was a big success.
