Disaster Management Workshop

16th and 17th January, 2012

On 16th and 17th of January 2012, a Disaster Management Seminar was organized by NSS unit of Usha Pravin Gandhi College of Management. The workshop was conducted by the staff of MCGM, 20 NSS students, 60 students from F.Y.B.Sc.I.T., teaching and non teaching staff attended the seminar. Before the commencement of seminar, refreshments were provided from 9am to 10am.

 

Day 1 (16th January, 2012)

The workshop started at 10am. The speakers for the 1st day were Mr. Rajendra Lokhande and Mr. Jaydeep. Mr. Rajendra Lokhande, the shift in-charge of Disaster Cell(MCGM) conducted the first half of seminar wherein he enlightened the students on what is disaster, types of man-made and natural disasters, the golden hour, and the BMC disaster helpline. The topics of discussion under the natural disasters were on earthquakes, floods, cyclone, fire, etc. and the 10 methods of tackling disaster. The next half was conducted by Mr. Jaydeep on fire management including the methods of fire extinction, categories of fire extinguishers i.e. Type A, Type B & C and the ABC Type which makes use of mono ammonium phosphate and nitrogen.

The lunch break was from 2.15pm to 3pm. The post-lunch session resumed by 3pm and the session was continued by Dr. Dalvi, a medical consultant. An interactive session was conducted by him wherein he briefed the students about the general principles of First Aid, Road Traffic Accident (RTA), and the emergency helpline numbers. The topics discussed by him under First Aid were Scene safety, Self safety and Victim safety, First Aid treatments for spine stabilisation, bleeding, fractures, skin burn and cardiac arrest. The various techniques for treating any injury were practically shown to the students by him. He also explained how to handle a person who suffers from fits and choking.

Dr. Dalvi demonstrated to the students how to give Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) to a person suffering from cardiac arrest. He introduced the ABCD technique of CPR i.e. Airway, Breathing, Circulation and Defibrillation.

Day 2 (17th January, 2012)

The second day of the workshop started with a practical session at 10.00 am by Mr P.S. Bramhadande. He taught the students different types of knots like rift knot, thumb knot, thief knot, multiple thumb knots and clove hitch which can be useful in saving a life during disaster. He showed various techniques for lifting a casualty in conscious and unconscious condition.

The second half of the session was conducted by Mr. Rajendra Lokhande wherein he explained the aim of Disaster Management which states to save lives, minimize damages and bring normalcy. He also explained the disaster management cycle, the present condition and the need for disaster management in Mumbai, the disaster management administration, the special projects undertaken by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) and MCGM’s emergency operating centre (EOC). He also provided us information on the emergency survival kit which is helpful during disasters.

The session ended at 1 pm. Lunch break was provided to the students. The post lunch session started at 2pm and was taken up by Mr. P.S. Brahmadande. It was a practical session wherein he showed us how to make improvised stretchers with the help of ropes, belts and blankets. These stretchers are helpful in carrying the casualty from the disaster site to the assembly point which would help to treat the injured and save a life. The seminar ended at 5.00pm followed by a vote of thanks by secretary of NSS unit and the program officer by giving a token of appreciation to the speakers.
